It is an AI Agent. Confirmed. But where is the return?

In Part 1 you learned to tell an AI agent from a pile of disguised if/else. Now comes the question that hits the cash register: does this deliver a return, or is it just pretty tech taking up space on the invoice?

Having AI and getting results with AI are two different things. AI without results is not an investment: it is cost dressed up as modernity.

The metrics you should demand

A good vendor does not run from numbers. Demand clarity on four indicators: 1) share of conversations resolved without a human; 2) first response time; 3) volume of repetitive contacts absorbed; 4) cost per contact. If they only talk tech and never numbers, they are selling the engine, not the trip.

The honest math

This is not about firing people, it is about no longer spending expensive people on cheap questions. AI absorbs the repetitive volume 24/7; your team moves to negotiation, the sensitive complaint, the exception. That is the return that never shows on the label but shows at month end.

The return is also in what AI does NOT do: a good AI knows when to hand off to a human with full context. AI handles volume; the person handles the exception.
